There was a (private) contest on Doomworld run by Job where one room had to be designed. There were no limits (except map size) and the goal was to make the most detailed map (read: room) ever. See the link for details on limits and boundaries.
It has got a lot of light variances, shadows, dark skies, atmospheric music, a surprise and one lamps (their shape) that are reminiscient of old GDR chemistry factories.
